Events & Lecture Series

The Comparative Literature Departmental Lecture Series, instituted in 2010, is intended as a forum for debating visions and methods of the comparative study of literatures. Autumn and Winter lectures are delivered by comparatists affiliated with the University of Chicago, with the Spring lecture typically featuring a scholar outside of our university chosen by the faculty and students.

In response to student and faculty interest and the institutional emphasis on diversity and inclusion programming, Comparative Literature has expanded its Departmental Lecture Series to include programming on issues related to gender, for period of eighteen months beginning in Winter 2018 through Spring 2019.  Programming will be in the form of lectures, workshops, and training — all focused around gender relations, combatting sexism, gender identity, and multicultural intersectionality.
 

The colloquium is a forum for free, non-hierarchical exchange of ideas among all members of the Department of Comparative Literature. The colloquium meets every first Friday of the month in Classics 113 from 2 to 4 PM to discuss prospective, current, or recently finished work, with a particular focus on comparative methodology. The double presentations are limited to 20 minutes each and are delivered in an informal, conversational style-- not read from paper. Each talk is followed by a 30-minute conversation, with a 10-minute tea break between the two talks.
